Whisperleaf is local-first today. This page describes what stays on your device and what leaves it when you use AI assist.
Your library stays on your device
EPUB files, reading progress, highlights, notes, and vocabulary are stored in your browser's IndexedDB on this device. Whisperleaf does not operate a cloud library or cross-device reading sync in the current release.
AI assist requests
When you look up a word or passage while signed in, Whisperleaf sends the selected text and nearby reading context to a server-side language model to generate explanations or translations. Your full book file is not uploaded. AI requests are tied to your account session and require a configured provider key.
Account data is separate from reading data
You can import books and read without signing in. The account system stores your profile, verified identities, password metadata, sessions, and security challenges on the configured server database. Your local library, reading progress, vocabulary, and notes remain in this browser and are not silently assigned to an account.
